This bed frame is made with new scaffolding redwood boards, which create a more rustic look than our other beds, as the planks are not planed. The wood is finely sanded and therefore is still very smooth to the touch but the bed has a slightly more rustic appearance as a result.
The boards are roughly 22cm in width and the head board is made up of three panels, making it approximately 66cm in height, while the foot end and sides are 22cm high.
The slats sit roughly 15cm off the ground. On a mattress with a thickness of 20cm, you would lie 35cm off the ground. This can be lowered or increased as you wish.
As with all our beds, there are no clips or brackets that support the side rails, which tend to bend over time. The side boards are simply screwed onto both head and foot boards and as they all sit directly on the ground, they are constantly supported by the floor. As a result, they will not bend over time and the bed should therefore be as strong in ten years time as on the day it is purchased!
We use solid wooden slats for the base, rather than thinner plywood sprung slats. The central reinforcing rail is independent of the slats, so can be positioned immediately below, to either give the slats no give whatsoever, or a tiny bit lower, to allow some flexibility in the base. This also means that over time, the slats won't droop in the middle, as the middle rail will act as a constant buffer.
The wood can be left unfinished, stained, waxed or oiled.
The bed is the photo has been finished with a medium oak stain.
